The 5th grade students worked very hard on free hand drawing their pumpkins, shading and coloring them to add depth and texture with warm colors, and finally adding cool colors to the background. So, when I told them to crumple up their paper when they were done, they were shocked! Students then added a high quality black watercolor to their artwork using a "wax resist" technique. The students had to learn to water down the paint, and figure out how much paint they needed or if they needed to add more water as they worked. It was a good learning experience for them that really made some students come out of their comfort zone. Overall, I think they really enjoyed the lesson and learned a lot. At the end of the project, some classes were able to hold a "positive critique," where students commented kindly on each other's artwork and asked art related questions. I was so impressed by how the students handled themselves, how kind they were to each other and discussed their art work in an appropriate way.
